We have a class on PF conservation efforts including Corners for Conservation, Build a Wildlife Area and precision farming to name a few. There is a hands on Safety Trail which focuses on gun safety in the field, We do a hands on Field Simulation with live birds and pointing dogs. Finally, there is gun safety and gun handling on our clay target range.

We hosted students from CSU, UNC, UCD, Aims Community College, Colorado Christian University, Colorado School of Mines, the Air Force Academy and the University of Wyoming.

]]> 1793 Habitat Project Tour https://greaterdenverpf.org/2024/04/20/habitat-project-tour/ Sat, 20 Apr 2024 15:46:19 +0000 https://southmetropf.org/?p=1410 On March 16, 2024, South Metro Pheasants Forever Habitat Chairman Dean Titterington attended a habitat project tour sponsored by the Morgan County Chapter. A focus was on corners that were planted with specific grass and other plant species that provide food and nesting cover. Dean’s German Shorthair Pointer, Powder, tagged along with him for the trip. Some youngsters, pictured here, got a big kick out of Powder actually going on a strong point from the roadside! A nervous rooster then flushed to provide a “perfect point” to what these conservation efforts are all about!

]]> 1410 Eastern Colorado Habitat Tour https://greaterdenverpf.org/2023/07/14/eastern-colorado-habitat-tour/ Fri, 14 Jul 2023 17:37:33 +0000 https://southmetropf.org/?p=1240 On July 7, Pheasants Forever, Colorado Wildlife Biologists, and Colorado Parks and Wildlife conducted a tour for PF Chapters and CPW staff. The tour occurred in eastern Colorado and visited several Corners for Conservation projects and a buffered playa wetland project. These sites were previously farmed and are now enrolled in high-quality habitats for upland and grassland birds, deer, wetland-dependent wildlife, and pollinators. All acres enrolled in these programs are enrolled in the Walk-in Access program, thus coupling habitat conservation with public access.

This tour highlighted the importance of both the 4 Corners and the USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service EQIP projects. These are critical for many forms of wildlife on the eastern plains. One only needed to listen to hear the insects and the songbirds making the habitat their home. I highly recommend visiting a PF & CPW project and seeing for oneself.

Of importance to all of us is the survival of pheasant and quail in these habitats. It might be a couple of years before good years like this one produces plentiful bird populations. But without habitat, it will not occur at all.

A special thank you to Michael and Bob for organizing the tour.

]]> 1240 New Cottonwoods at Barr Lake https://greaterdenverpf.org/2023/06/29/new-cottonwoods-at-barr-lake/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 22:32:00 +0000 https://southmetropf.org/?p=1226 On June 29, Barr Lake State Park and South Metro Pheasants Forever hosted a team of Oxy volunteers in a Cottonwood replacement project. The cottonwoods that surround Barr Lake serve as a home for many different species of animals that are reaching the end of their lives. The project planted a dozen cottonwoods in a meadow on the south side of the park’s preserve area.

A special thanks to both Barr Lake staff and Oxy volunteers for joining us in this project! And a big thanks to all of the PF volunteers who support these projects. Our wildlife thanks you.

]]> 1226 Earth Day 2023 https://greaterdenverpf.org/2023/04/22/earth-day-2023/ Sat, 22 Apr 2023 14:32:00 +0000 https://southmetropf.org/?p=1207 On Saturday, April 22, a cold and blustery Earth Day, South Metro PF again sponsored adding to the pollinator plot at Barr Lake State Park. Joined by the Wildlands Restoration Volunteers and with Oxy’s financial support, Pheasant’s Forever volunteers and Barr Lake staff guided the planting of 130 + rabbit brush bushes and a variety of flowering plants. The purpose of the pollinator plot is a multiyear project to enhance the habitat environment for birds and bees while providing a great educational environment for the community.

400 feet of nesting, berries and shelter were on the agenda for planting. First, the holes (185 of them) were dug. Six cubic yards of compost and mulch were used to make our new plants welcome as we tucked them into the ground. Our new residents- 35 Junipers, 60 each of chokeberry and sumac bushes were planted.

There were approximately 60 people present to do the planting -20 students and 5 adults from STEAD school, 30+ Oxy employees, the Pheasants Forever Habitat and outreach chairs, and a half dozen employees from Barr Lake.

All enjoyed the morning of connecting to each other, and to the wildlife that we are helping protect!

]]> 978 April 23, 2022 – Hands-on Habitat Project https://greaterdenverpf.org/2022/04/25/april-23-2022-hands-on-habitat-project/ Mon, 25 Apr 2022 16:52:01 +0000 https://southmetropf.org/?p=949 In partnership with Barr Lake and Oxy, SE Metro Pheasants Forever Chapter joined the national effort for “Hands-on Habitat”. This project highlighted dry lands habitat development in Barr Lake’s Educational Plots. Previously, the primary development has been with the pollinator plot. This project planting included planting rabbit brush and prairie dropseed plants. It also included a dry land seeding of a grass mix specifically designed by the National Pheasants Forever wildlife team. The mix included Blue Stem, Indian Grass, Switchgrass as well as several other native grasses.

]]> 949 September 25, 2021 was National Public Land Day! https://greaterdenverpf.org/2021/10/11/september-25-2021-was-national-public-land-day/ Mon, 11 Oct 2021 20:16:41 +0000 https://southmetropf.org/?p=663 Sept. 25 was National Public Land Day!

South Metro Pheasants Forever and Oxy joined to participate in two events at Barr Lake State Park that day.

The first was the painting of a mural depicting our pollinator plot and the multicultural volunteers responsible for the creation of the pollinator plot.

The artist, Dominic Velando, sketched the mural and guided the volunteers in the painting. Thanks Dominic! The second was adding more pollinators plants to the plot!

]]> 663 Oxy volunteers team for two Barr Lake projects https://greaterdenverpf.org/2021/08/25/oxy-volunteers-team-for-two-barr-lake-projects/ Wed, 25 Aug 2021 21:10:00 +0000 https://southmetropf.org/?p=581 On Thursday, August 19, PF and Occidental volunteers teamed with Barr Lake staff to complete the next stages of 2 projects. The first project, an exciting project that will continue for the next month, is the mural project.

The first step was to build the fencing structure needed as the surface for the mural. The team measured, dug holes, measured again, widened the holes and finally cemented in the upright structure beams for the fence. It was hard work, and created many laughs as the structure took shape!

The next steps on the mural will take place in September as the fence is finished and the mural sketched in for the final painting stage on National Public Land day, the 25th of September. At the same time as the posts were being planted, additional planting was taking place in the Pollinator Plot. More rabbit brush, coneflowers, and others joined the growing plot. The additional plants were gently placed by the Oxy team as the PF team helped with both projects!

It was a great team day. Thanks Oxy!!
